Nico House
Nico House has been thoughtfully designed as a residence for third-generation Chinese overseas descendants in Bangkok. This home creatively integrates traditional Chinese architectural principles, grounded in the philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism, with modern design elements while being attuned to the contextual characteristics of its location.
Traditional Chinese architecture is typically classified into two primary styles, reflecting Confucian and Taoist values. In this project, the layout is meticulously crafted to promote balance and a distinct hierarchy of functional spaces. The design highlights variations in height within both the interior and exterior environments, as well as the alignment of the building’s axis. Each of these components adheres to planning principles rooted in Confucian thought. Meanwhile, The heart of the project features a central courtyard, known as 'Siheyuan' in Chinese, which embodies the connection between nature and architecture, echoing Daoist ideals that emphasize harmony with the natural world.
The ground floor is designed as an open space, characterized by expansive floor-to-ceiling glass walls that invite abundant natural light and fresh air into the home's interior. This configuration not only facilitates a sense of openness but also fosters an inviting atmosphere conducive to family gatherings. A beautifully crafted wooden staircase leads to the second floor, where interconnected rooms surround a central hallway. Following traditional Chinese principles, the master bedroom is strategically situated in the deepest part of the house, underscoring its significance.
The building employs a harmonious palette of colors and materials that evoke a cool ambiance typical of Chinese architecture. Stone, tiles, and a predominately gray color scheme contribute to a tranquil atmosphere. In contrast, the use of natural materials, such as wood, provides balance and adds warmth to the interior environment. Additionally, the strategic design of interior lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall warmth and inviting character of Nico House, making it a truly livable space.
