TCDC Sakon Nakhon
The new TCDC Sakon Nakhon reimagines a former transportation hub as a contemporary civic platform where culture, urban life, and creative exchange intersect. Rather than functioning as an isolated institutional building, the project embraces the complexity, density, and everyday movement of the surrounding commercial district to create an open and evolving public environment.
At the heart of the project is a reinterpretation of indigo beyond its role as traditional craft. Inspired by the material qualities and production processes of indigo — including layering, translucency, oxidation, and absorption — the architecture translates these characteristics into spatial atmosphere, material expression, and environmental experience. Facades inspired by market canopies and hanging indigo textiles create a dynamic urban surface that shifts through light, shadow, and movement throughout the day.
The ground floor dissolves the boundary between building and city through open public spaces, informal gathering areas, exhibitions, and flexible programs that encourage spontaneous interaction and community engagement. Internally, workshops, material libraries, and creative spaces position the building as a living platform for exploring new possibilities of indigo within contemporary culture, design, and everyday life.
Rather than preserving local culture as a static representation, the project proposes architecture as an active participant in the ongoing transformation of Sakon Nakhon’s cultural identity and public life.
